Airman McGill specialized in Electronic Warfare which involved maintaining and repairing the AN/ALQ-184 Electronic Attack Pod and associated equipment. Over the next 6 years he went on deployments to Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and state service in New Mexico. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.
While in the Air National Guard, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry which was completed in 2003. He worked as a chemistry researcher where he was named an author on original research. Another transformative position was working as an address lister and interviewer for the 2000 Census.
Subsequently, he worked in the defense industry briefly before returning to college in early 2006 to work towards Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He welcomed his son later in 2006.
